Alma 36:21-22
21 Yea, I say unto you, my son, that there could be nothing so exquisite and so bitter as were my pains. Yea, and again I say unto you, my son, that on the other hand, there can be nothing so exquisite and sweet as was my joy.

22 Yea, methought I saw, even as our father Lehi saw, God sitting upon His throne, surrounded with numberless concourses of angels, in the attitude of singing and praising their God; yea, and my soul did long to be there.

Here we go.  The call arrived today at about 2 p.m.  Everyone who could come gathered for the opening at 3:30 p.m.  And .......... he opened it.

Mozambique Maputo Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Report to the Provo Missionary Training Center on July 11, 2012.
Portuguese is the language.

NO WAY!!!

Mom cried.  Dad stood shocked.  And Chris, well, he could not be any more excited.  I'm sure the Mama will get excited, but for now she is just trying to handle the news she never saw coming--AFRICA.  The Dad thinks it is awesome; but he, too, thinks it is far, far away.  He's correct.

The mission actually covers two unconnected areas of Africa, Mozambique and Angola. Below are some maps to make it clearer.
Mozambique is on the eastern border of Africa next to the Indian Ocean, and . . .

. . . Angola is on the west coast of Africa next to the Atlantic Ocean.

I guess there are elephants there.  He hopes to see some.

Here are some facts about the mission and about Elder Richard G. Scott's visit there in January of  2011.
“You are some of the most precious children on earth, and God loves you,” Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles told Latter-day Saints of Mozambique recently while he was in the Africa Southeast Area. Eleven years after dedicating this country for the preaching of the gospel, Elder Scott returned in January 2011 to find that the Church has made great progress.

On Elder Scott’s first visit, there were only 40 Church members in Mozambique, and the country was part of the South Africa Johannesburg Mission. At the time of his second visit, the Church had grown to more than 5,000 members spread throughout two districts, 19 branches, and three groups meeting across the country. Mozambique is also the headquarters to the Mozambique Maputo Mission, which covers all of Mozambique and the country of Angola (on the southwest coast of Africa).
That's it folks.  Now we start the preparations.  Visa, clothes, Deet, luggage, a few extra country specific shots -- you know, all the regular stuff we all do before going off to Africa.

Signing off for now,
The Mama
